Hey friends! It's been a busy start to the year and we're very excited to share lots of cool news with you over the coming months. First off, Lauren and I found out that we made the top 3 finalists in the 2018 Emerging Artist Program put on by the Prophets of Music Society. We're honoured to be selected alongside fellow artists Kate Stevens and Josh Sahunta, and as finalists, we'll be recording our debut single with JUNO Award-winning producer/musician Russell Broom at OCL Studios this summer. How cool is that!?
In other news, we've finally finished building our music room!! This project began last year and took a while to complete, but now it's done. **YAHOO!! This place is where we write all of our new songs, practice, rehearse, and work on all things music related. We'll be putting together a short video in the coming weeks that documents the build process, so keep your eyes peeled for that. For now, here's a photo from the drywalling stage last spring (Luna has grown SOOO much since then).
"A stellar combination of beautiful music, harmonies, and heart-warming stories. It's a joy to see these two talented artists perform and Alberta is lucky to claim them as our own."
- Karen Evans; Window on the West Committee, The Calgary Stampede (AB)
Howdy folks! It's a new year and we figured a quick update and recap would be in order. 2017 was a really exciting year for us and we hope it was a great year for you as well. We officially launched our Flint & Feather project this past June and spent the next seven months working hard to share our new sound and direction with folks all over the place. It's been quite the journey since then! Some specific career highlights from this past year include:
- Performed 65 gigs (32 in Europe, 33 in North America)
- Performed 11 Music Festival (1 in Europe, 10 in North America)
- Received three separate career support grants
- Recorded a new single with producer Russell Broom
- Upgraded our touring vehicle to a 1984 Dodge Ram Prospector
- Survived 3500+ KMs through the Rocky Mountains
At the moment we're in the midst of a songwriting season, an we'll be performing a few specific public events over the next couple of months. We'd love to see you at an upcoming gig! A full listing of our upcoming performances in and around Alberta can be found HERE.
Lastly, we have a lot of plans for 2018 and if you'd like to get more of an inside scoop on things, please SIGN-UP to our Artist Newsletter and keep your eyes peeled for more personal updates.
Hey folks! We hope you're doing well. There's snow in Calgary now... but it's brought with it a fresh breath of productivity! We recently had the pleasure of being interviewed by Karl Magi for a feature on his Canadian Folk Band Profile blog. It's one of the more in-depth interviews we've done so far, and we talked all about our touring endeavours, running a music business, and how family is very important to us. It was a lot of fun and if you like reading, we hope you'll take a peek for yourself. See the full interview by clicking HERE.
We were recently awarded tour funding from the SOCAN Foundation to help cover some of the expenses we faced on western Canadian tour this summer. We're thrilled about their support because touring Canada sure ain't cheap, and once you factor in the cost of fuel and BC ferries, it's just downright expensive! Thank you SOCAN Foundation for helping us pursue our dreams!
Next week we'll be hunkering down for a very important project: a 12-week self-imposed songwriting residency. It'll be the first time in our lives where we'll be spending regular, dedicated time honing our craft and focusing on writing new material. In a lot of ways I (Joal) think I'm a little scared as an artist that we won't have anything worthwhile to share, so I would greatly appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and encouragement for artist inspiration and creativity.
#tbt to earlier this year when we were #jamming in #rotterdam #netherlands with this #groovy couple. Pretty #funky for #folkies eh? We enjoyed #dutch #koffie and #pancakes afterwards and #Luna even took a nap! Best day ever. #funk #folk #roots #canyoufeelit #holland #guitar #violin #piano #jamsession #jammin #eh

A while back while touring the gulf islands, we met Gail Lynne Goodwin of Inspire Me Today during a performance at the Tree House Cafe on Salt Spring Island. She invited us to submit some thoughts on the topic of thankfulness and, well, this is what we came up with: The Key to Contentment: Thankfulness.
In all the busyness of this past touring season we nearly forgot to share this post... If you're curious to know more, or have some thoughts to share with us, please drop us a line? We'd also love for you to share this post as well - as we're always curious to see how people might respond. THANK YOU!
My goodness western Canada is beautiful! We just returned home from a two-week tour through British Columbia and Alberta, stopping off in Revelstoke, Kamloops, Chilliwack, Nanaimo, Chemainus, Port Alberni, Victoria, Powell River, Earls Cove, Calgary, and Didsbury. It was a whirlwind trip of western Canada and we put a whole lot of KMs on the new tour vehicle. While on tour we were hosted by some of the kindest, most generous people we know, and had the opportunity to meet plenty of lovely folks at various festivals, music series, and house concerts. THANK YOU for making this tour a great success as well as an enjoyable experience. We had no idea how sleeping in a 1984 Dodge Ram camper van would be for the three of us - turns out it was a great deal of fun for the most part (there were a few sleepless nights).
We also wanted to highlight the gracious support of the SOCAN Foundation for helping cover some of the expenses we faced on this tour. It ain't cheap touring Canada, and once you factor in ferries, it's just downright expensive! Thank you SOCAN Foundation for helping us pursue our dreams!
In other cool news, while on tour we found out that our song 'My Way' (co-written with Kyle McVea and performed by Kendra Kay) was nominated for 'Single of the Year' at the Manitoba Country Music Awards! It's a great feeling to get this kind of industry recognition for our song writing efforts and we wish Kendra great success with her recent nomination. On the topic of song writing... we will be unveiling an exciting new song writing initiative in the coming month(s), and we hope that you'll stay tuned to hear more about this exciting announcement. Hey folks! It's time for another update and boy do we have a lot to share... To start things off, our official rebrand has gone over really well with audiences throughout Alberta. We're very happy to report that we've been confirmed to perform at 10+ festivals this year, and we'll be heading out on a Western Canadian Tour mid-August to begin promoting our new name, sound, and career plans for the coming year.
It's been an extremely busy time for us trying to stay on top of bookings, funding our endeavours, and making future plans for recording so we've decided to set aside some focused time this fall for songwriting once we return home from tour. We've been working on an exciting project that should help facilitate songwriting opportunities, but we're keeping that under wraps until it's complete and ready to share with the world.
Okay, that's all for now! Ciao ciao.
Hey folks! While we were touring Europe earlier this year we were able to partner with Sofar Sounds The Hague for an intimate House Concert performance in the heart of the city. They just notified us that the video has been released worldwide and we hope you enjoy the footage. We're thrilled with how they were able to capture the event atmosphere and have plans to partner with them for another performance in 2018.
Welcome fellow travellers from far and fantastical lands. Sooo much has happened this past year! We just returned from touring 32-dates in Europe and finally decided to rebrand as Flint & Feather. As you can probably guess, we are super excited to start sharing all about our new direction and sound. It seems more and more every day that we're living a real life choose-your-own-adventure story as touring folk/roots musicians and artisans - only now as husband, wife, and baby.
Although we will be posting newsworthy items on all of our social media, we will be sharing extra exclusive content through our mailing list. Please venture on over and SIGN-UP directly to receive personal updates, new music, and other details as we begin this new chapter in life together.
Finally, we want to thank you for checking out our new website. It's under construction, so please keep posted as we continue to update it by the week. We'd also love to hear how you heard about Flint & Feather as we haven't made this rebrand official yet. Feel free to hit us up at the Contact page and drop us a line?
